The 2010 Kansas American Legion Baseball Zone Tournament from Sabetha was in action last night.
In the first game, number one seed Seneca powered past number four seed Hiawatha 11-2. Kyle Haverkamp gets credited with the win, pitching a complete game while only allowing one earned run, two hits, and recording seven strikeouts on 97 pitches. Haverkamp also went 2-5 scoring three runs on a double and a three-run blast in the top of the seventh earning him the Subway Player of the Game. Eric Heurter went 2-4 with three RBI including a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth. Cody Heiman also went 3-4 while scoring two runs.
For Hiawatha, Nate Deforrest gets the loss allowing eleven hits and seven earned runs on 112 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Tanner Smith went 1-3 with one run and Gabe Noll also went 1-3. Hiawatha falls to 11-12 on the season and will face Centralia Tuesday at 6pm. As for Seneca, they move to 15-5, completing their sixth win in a row, and will be playing Sabetha Wednesday at 8pm.
After the Seneca versus Hiawatha game, number two seed Sabetha edged out a win against number three seed Doniphan County 3-1. The game was a pitcher‘s duel between Jerod Hawkins of Doniphan County and Riley Wells of Sabetha. They combined for 26 strikeouts. The game was tied at one apiece until Reid Bruggeman stepped up the to the plate and smashed a solo homer to lead off the fourth. Only up by 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Ross Bruggeman followed Reid‘s lead with a solo homerun of his own.
Wells gets the win and was the Subway Player of the Game, pitching the complete game, allowing just two singles, one earned run, with 11 strikeouts on 121 pitches. Jerod Hawkins was credited with the loss, pitching a complete game allowing four hits, two earned runs with 15 strikeouts on 100 total pitches. Hawkins and Paden Halter had Doniphan County‘s only two hits and both finished 1-3. Sabetha who has won four of five, moves to 20-9 and will be playing Seneca Wednesday at 8pm. Doniphan County is now 14-8 and will be playing Holton Tuesday at 8pm.
